PORTRAITURE

Portraits are my passion.

I love the interaction, the emotion, the truth and ultimately, the illusion. The idea that two human beings can have a conversation entirely emoted by subtle physical and metaphysical cues amazes me to this day. I dare say that at times, I have learned more about my subjects in 5 minutes of photographing them than in a day’s worth of talking with them. When both the photographer and the subject share an open and honest moment in time – magic happens and a portrait is made. That is the key to portraiture – human connection.

BEAUTY

Beauty photography is every little girl’s dream come true. In photography, capturing beauty and creating beauty can be completely different things.

From styling to photography to high-end retouching, your photos will reveal your ideal you. My team and I work closely with all our models to create beauty ‘looks’ that accentuate their best features and often create characters for them to embody and express for a day. After all, photography, like all art forms, is as much about entertainment and drama as it is about making a statement.

ENGAGEMENTS

There are few things I find as fulfilling as helping a newly-engaged couple celebrate their love & commitment to each other by capturing special moments between them. To share in their moment of love is such a precious thing – to be able to help them capture & create memories that will last a lifetime, even more so.

Each of these photos revisits times and places of importance in each couple’s journey together so far. In doing so, it makes those memories a part of the promise of their future together.

DANCEWORKS: Sydney Contemporary Dance Centre

DANCEWORKS is a Sydney-based contemporary dance centre which aims to bring together dance performance, training and development spaces in one all inclusive facility. The centre serves to nurture, educate, equip and provide a platform for emerging dancers and choreographers while also acting as an ambassador for contemporary dance by making an effort to demystify dance and present it as an approachable, accessible and relevant art form in today’s society.

The philosophy of Danceworks is to promote dance as: a bridge to understanding and acceptance in society, a celebration of individuality and diversity; and as an instrument for expression and holistic well-being.

The overall design of the centre draws inspiration from the delicate balance between the eclectic movement and distinguished stillness in contemporary dance. By exploring the relationships between the moving and the still, the lived and the sensed, Danceworks strives to complement rather than compete with the myriad activities taking place within the centre in order to truly express the language of dance through the poetics of space.

THE EXPERIMENTAL ART FOUNDATION (EAF) GALLERY

THE EAF GALLERY is a Sydney-based gallery and workshop for the EAF, a controversial and quirky group of Australian artists. Their book ‘A Decade at the E.A.F.: A History of the Experimental Art Foundation 1974 – 1984’ opens with a concise four-point philosophy of the EAF:

“1. Our apprehension of the world is active, not passive, and art displays an emergent apprehension. 2. Art is only incidentally and not essentially aesthetic. Art is concerned with every kind of value and not particularly with beauty. 3. Art interrogates the status quo; it is essentially, and not incidentally, radical. 4. Art is experimental action: it models possible forms of life and makes them available to public criticism.”

The oxymoron ‘emergent apprehension’ talks about the convergence of two contradicting and contrasting ideas and it this fusing of opposites and exploration of the tension which exists in between both elements that is one of the defining characteristics of the EAF. The EAF’s aim to create ‘dialogue’ to provoke progressive thought also underlines all their creative efforts.

Based on those statements, I aimed to design a space that would not merely house art but a space that would facilitate the conversation between artist and audience – one that would blur the lines between process and product and provide an open platform for expression, debate and creative energy.

The space is divided into 5 levels (including a basement and a rooftop level) that interweave to form a 3-dimensional hierarchy of space that naturally propels one through the building. Elegant ramps connect the main levels further adding to the fluidity of the space. Artist’s studios and workshops are left physically open but visually ‘framed’ to create the illusion of a ‘working gallery’ where the nuts and bolts of the elusive artistic processes are laid bare for all to see. Likewise, gallery visitors unknowingly pass through visual ‘frames’ in the space and are transformed into moving art – What is art? Who is the spectator? In this way, the EAF Gallery brings its visitors one step closer to having an intimate encounter with creativity.
